Mathematical Proficiency of Education Students

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the mathematical proficiency of education students in a university, in a highly urbanized city, in Central Philippines, during the first semester of the school year 2024-2025.  The descriptive research design was used. The data needed for this study was collected from 237 second year and third year education students using self-made questionnaire that has passed validity and reliability using stratified random sampling and Cronbach’s Alpha formula. The study examined students’ profiles based on age, average family monthly income, school of origin, and academic program, and assessed their proficiency in operations on integers and fractions, mathematical sentences and expressions, interest, and statistics and probability. Results revealed that most students demonstrated moderate proficiency across most areas, with the highest performance in mathematical sentences and expressions and the lowest in statistics and probability. Significant differences were found based on program and school of origin. The findings inform the development of instructional materials by recommending targeted support in weaker areas such as statistics and probability while sustaining enrichment in mathematical sentences and expressions to ensure balanced proficiency growth
