English Reading Levels of Grade 6 Learners

Abstract

The researchers studied the English reading proficiency of grade 6 learners to excellent solutions for reducing the low English reading levels of grade 6 learners. This study utilized the descriptive research design to assess the English reading levels of grade 6 learners in the public elementary school, a medium-sized division, in the highly urbanized city of Negros Occidental during the School Year 2023-2024. The data needed for this study was collected from 86 enrolled grade 6 learners using the Standardized National Assessment Tool through Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) Assessment Tool for grade 6 learners. Grade 6 learners were found to be at the frustration level in both oral word recognition and reading comprehension, with difficulties rooted in school‑related factors such as overcrowded classrooms, limited access to age‑appropriate reading materials, and teaching approaches that emphasize decoding over comprehension. These challenges cut across demographic profiles, pointing to systemic issues in instructional practices and literacy support. Findings call for implementation of comprehensive reading programs, strengthen teacher training, and provide contextualized materials to improve learners’ reading proficiency and overall academic achievement.
